By the end of this you know which of the two you need, and what to ask before signing.

Two balance scales side by side, one tipping toward speed and one toward solidity
The short answer

An agency working with AI produces faster and cheaper, because the execution layer — drafts, variants, reports, analysis — is done by agents instead of people on day rates. A traditional agency usually brings deeper accumulated experience, supplier relationships and physical production. The difference is not the quality of the final work, which depends on the people in both cases: it is how many tests you can run in the same month on the same budget.

The question almost always arrives in the same shape: "so are you cheaper?" That is the wrong question, and answering it pulls attention away from the thing that matters.

Yes, production costs less. In an MIT experiment with 444 professionals, ChatGPT cut the time spent on writing tasks and moved the work from rough drafting towards ideas and editing. But if your problem is that you do not know which message works, a discount does not fix it.

The comparison, row by row

Traditional agencyAgency working with AI
Time for a landing page2-4 weeksdays
Variants tested per month2-3, and they cost10-20, and they are cheap
Production costhigh, on day ratesa fraction
Copy qualitydepends on the copywriterdepends on the copywriter
Sector experienceoften deeperoften younger
Physical production, shootsyesalmost never
Main riskslownessvolume without direction

The two rows nobody usually puts in the table are the fourth and the last.

Copy quality depends on the person in both cases. AI does not write better than a good copywriter, and it does not rescue a mediocre one. Anyone selling "better copy thanks to AI" is selling the demo.

The risk of an AI agency is volume without direction. Producing ten times as much without a strategy above it means ten times as much that does not convert, plus the belief that you tested something.

As Growth credo

Speed is worthless if you are running in the wrong direction.

What does a traditional agency still do better?

Worth saying, even from the other side of the fence.

  1. NOIPhysical production — shoots, crewed video, events. Somebody has to be there, and no agent can do that
  2. NOIHeavily regulated sectors — pharma, finance, legal. Relationships and knowledge of the rules matter, and both take years
  3. NOILong-standing relationships — an agency that has worked with you for eight years knows your business better than any brief. That is not purchasable

One concrete case of the second: in the UK the FCA requires every financial promotion to be clear, fair and not misleading, whatever the medium.

If your need is one of those three, speed is not the right criterion for choosing.

What should you ask an AI agency before signing?

Four questions separate agencies that genuinely work this way from ones that only changed their website.

"Show me something you threw away." Whoever produces a lot and controls quality discards a lot. If they cannot show you rejected work, there is no quality gate.

"Who writes the strategy?" If the answer contains a tool name, you have your answer. Strategy is the part that does not get delegated.

"What broke last month?" Anyone running AI in production has failures weekly, partly because models guess when they are unsure, as a 2025 paper by Kalai and colleagues explains. An agency with no failures either is not shipping, or is not looking.

"How many variants did you test for your last client, and which won?" That is the one that exposes volume without direction: if they produced a lot but cannot say which won, they were not testing.

A fork in the road, one path short and straight, the other longer with signposts along it

The real criterion for deciding

It is not price, and it is simpler than it looks: how much do you already know about what works in your market?

If you know — you have the data, you know which message converts, you just need it executed well and fast — an agency working with AI gives you more execution for the same budget.

If you do not know, what you need first is somebody who helps you find out, and there production speed matters less than the quality of the questions they ask during discovery. Some traditional agencies are very good at that.

The method we use to alternate machine and people is in the vibe marketing guide; what you can genuinely hand an agent is in the AI agents guide.

Frequently asked questions

Is an agency using AI cheaper than a traditional one?

Production costs less, because agents do it instead of people on day rates. But the real value is not the discount: it is how many variants you can test in the same month on the same budget. If an agency sells you AI purely as a smaller invoice, they are describing the least interesting part.

Is the work lower quality with an AI agency?

It depends on the people, exactly as it does with the other kind. AI does not write better than a good copywriter and does not rescue a mediocre one: it moves people's time from production to strategy and control. Remove the control and quality collapses quickly.

How do I tell whether an agency really works with AI or just says so?

Ask to see work they discarded, who writes the strategy, and what broke last month. Anyone genuinely working this way has precise answers to all three. Anyone who only changed their website stalls on the first one.

When is a traditional agency still the better choice?

When you need physical production like shoots and events, in heavily regulated sectors where relationships and knowledge of the rules matter, and when you have a years-long relationship with people who know your business better than any brief. In those three cases speed is not the deciding factor.

Can I work with both?

Yes, and it is more common than people think: the traditional one on physical production and the long relationship, the AI one on funnels, landing pages, campaigns and content. One of the two has to hold the strategy, though, otherwise you end up with two directions on the same brand.

How long before results show?

The first things go live in days rather than weeks, and you see that immediately. Real growth still takes months, because it needs test cycles and data: what changes is how many cycles fit into those months. Anyone promising results in a week is selling the demo.
